Poetry Competition

Lightship are running an interesting collection of writing comps. Here is the contact address if anyone is interested. http://www.lightshippublishing.co.uk/competitions

Sean O'Brien gave a resounding reading at the LRB bookshop the other night where Ashok and I attended to the refreshments and rubbernecked the rubberneckers. I noticed a fair share of delightful bitchiness going on between some of the minor poets who turned up. It reminded me of the theatre world I used to inhabit. Minus the sex.

  1. There may be a poem there somewhere, Fiona, in the minor poets bitchiness

  2. Oh, I know. It sounds bad. And anything I direct at others comes flying right back into my face. But still, I think there is a whole realm of fear and desire in the literary world that I haven't seen since I worked in theatre. There are all these unwritten rules, it seems, about what one can say, who one can get away with talking to. At the LRB it was a bit like being at court. Knowing one's place in the pecking order, not stepping out of line. So of course I did.

I am planning to put on an alternative type reading/music event that will give writers a chance to read their antisocial, misbehaving, worst stuff and everyone will be encouraged to be bad as hell and very, very minor.

Ventenackers get down and dirty! What do you think?
